Philosophical Investigations - 25 August 2012 @ Lit & Phil. Who would have predicted that Astrology would be such a popular subject? Star charts were rarely in focus as it turned out. With notable exceptions most agreed that astrology is not a science. If it’s all in the interpretation of ambiguous principles, and picking up clues from the subject, perhaps there is still value in this. Or is this a slippery slope leading us back to some new dark age? Scientific method opens things up and dispels mystery, but is something lost in the process? Do we need to choose between wonder and analysis – can’t we do both? Feelings ran high; many had much to say. We got a bit stuck. There was no mention of the problem of free-will for example. Scientism and mysticism played peek-a-boo with improbable portents of disaster. Who’s to say what the future holds – it’s in the stars I guess. It’s difficult to be calm and thoughtful in large groups – a split and a plenary might be better if we continue to be popular down at the Lit & Phil…

Thanks Andy, and well chaired. It was a lively group but I got the impression that there wasn’t much listening going on. I think for those who hadn’t been along before I ought to point out that the group is usually far better behaved!
And one further thing, just to clarify things early: “Orthodoxy: Beliefs which are declared by a group to be true and normative. Heresy is a departure from and relative to a given orthodoxy”
Thanks for the comments Jonathan. They have been slow to appear because I didn’t realise I was supposed to approve them.. which I have now done! To confuse matters further, I think we are just about to switch to a new website… things move so fast! Do you fancy doing a brief notice on Orthodoxy for the email newsletter?
